Look Up – Kim Sokolowski

At the Eaton Center

At the Eaton Center

For my sign I have words “Look Up” with an arrow point downward.  I hope to get a range of people those who actually look up, those that look downward and those that catch my mistake and either come up to me to tell me what I did wrong or just smile.

Originally my idea first started off with a sign that just said “Look Up”.  The reason why I decided to do this is because I always find myself trying firgure out what other people are staring at because of my curiousity.

So I thought that I would play on that curiousity of others for my sign.  But as I was building my sign, I thought of the idea of turning the arrow upside in hopes to make people either smile or think and to get a broader range of reactions.  I did get some of the expect results, such as some looking up and others looking down.  Some looked both up and down, then they gave me a confused look.  Others would call out from a distance “Look at your sign!” or “The arrow, the arrow!” as they probably question my intelligence.

I had people come up and approach me too.  A few of them wanted photographs and others would asked what the purpose of my sign was.  Surprising after telling them about our class project, a couple asked me if I went to Ryerson.

I also got to meet a couple of interesting people too.  I meet a few people that had just come to Canada, one was from Spain, another from Poland and the other from India. Also I met this one man with a puppet.

So in the end I was happy with changing my idea for my sign as I was making it, because if I had just stuck with the just the “Look up” I would never have gotten the range of reactions that I did end up getting.  And I probably would have never gotten as many people I as I did that ended up approaching me.

The location where we held the signs at was at the Eaton Center just across from the festival being held at Dundas Square.  This location and timing was perfect for this assignment because we had mass amounts of people passing by us.  So that definitly increased our chances of getting reactions from our signs.

Even though I got a good outcome from my experiment, I probably would change my sign to something more interactive with the audience.  Mostly because of the many positive reactions that I noticed that my teammates had with their signs, which have said “Sign This” or “Jump for Art”.
